Atmel's New Force Sensing Technology Delivers Extraordinary Touch Experience by Allowing Users More Control Through the Pressure of Their Touch

San Jose, CA, January 7, 2016 — Atmel® Corporation (NASDAQ: ATML), a leader in microcontroller (MCU) and touch technology solutions, today announced its Bluetooth Smart BTLC1000 solution was honored with Electronic Products’ “Product of the Year Award.”

This year marks the 40th Annual Electronic Products’ “Product of the Year Awards,” which recognizes the best products in the electronics industry. The editors of Electronic Products — a leading trade publication for electronic design engineers — evaluated thousands of products launched in 2015. The winning products were selected on the basis of innovative design, significant advancement in technology or application and substantial achievement in price and performance.

The Atmel | Smart BTLC1000 low-power Bluetooth system-on-chip (SoC) demonstrated success by delivering the lowest power consumption on the market today, in the smallest package form factor.

Atmel’s BTLC1000 sets new low-power standards with at least 30 percent power savings in dynamic mode compared to available solutions. Solutions are available in small 2.1mm x 2.1mm WLCSP packages, enabling design flexibility for next-generation Internet of Things (IoT) applications, and provide designers a very low-power platform to develop smart, connected devices in space-constrained applications.

“There have been at least six Bluetooth Smart chip releases in the last few months, but this device stands out for a few reasons,” said Jim Harrison, Editor of Electronic Products. “These chips target wearables, so low power is essential, and this chip is the lowest you can find, taking less than 4mA in RX and less than 3mA in TX at 0dbm. Even more, the chip's all-important sleep current is 1.1µA and the receiver has -95dBm sensitivity. The solution combines Cortex-M0 processor, 128 Kbytes of RAM, and a qualified Bluetooth Smart protocol stack in ROM, including GAP, GATT, ATT and L2CAP service layer protocols and a security manager.”
