SIOs support a higher current (25mA) compared to a GPIO (8mA)
SIO pins support programmable output voltage levels (Voh) and programmable input threshold. GPIO pins support only CMOS/TTL output voltage levels and input voltage levels
SIOs support hot swap functionality while GPIO does not support
GPIO supports LCD, CapSense and analog connectivity on every GPIO, while SIO does not support these.
Physically, SIO is available on a single port namely Port 12, where as other ports are GPIOs.
